Wish me luck!I’m a self-learner of Japanese. This is a really useful tool.Koichi (founder of Tofugu/WaniKani) and his team have done a superb job of giving timely feedback. I used WaniKani for 32 levels (took me a little over a year, I think that's slower than average). Learning kanji, in particular, always felt like an overwhelming mountain to climb. Learn Japanese kanji the effective way!

After I tried the two free levels, I signed up for the $80 yearly subscription. WaniKani is way better than Heisig’s Remembering The Kanji. So, one can do better than I have in terms of # of kanji/month. That is the one downside to WK and other SRS based learning methods.Wow! Although it varies class-to-class, many first year Japanese students don’t learn more than ~100 kanji in their first year.

What’s the deal? Without a thorough grasp of kanji, you will not make it very far. So, roughly 80+ kanji per month. With the extra levels that WaniKani added, I’m planning to take the JLPT N1 this winter.

I have emailed the team on various occasions, and have received prompt emails always within 48 hours. Guru consists of two stages. Once the yearly/monthly subscription is over, you’re sent back to the free levels (1 and 2). WaniKani.

My average is around 12 days per level, but I’ve done a couple of levels in as few as 8 days. How can people level up in ~ 8 days? I’m also not aware of any comprehensive Anki deck which exists for RTK.I also agree with an older comment about no offline support in the third-party app – but again, since its made out of an intent to help the larger community, I guess there’s little room for complaint. Levels 1-10 You should get through these levels before trying to read too much. WaniKani has helped immeasurably by making my life in Japan easier, but it has also given me the confidence to leave my comfort zone and seek experiences where Japanese is the only option.After completing college I wanted to continue studying Japanese on my own. When I joined WaniKani I found out that kanji isn’t so terrifying after all — In fact it’s quite fun! You can see the average # of days per level in the stats (through 3rd party apps, I believe), but, that average duration includes radicals, kanji, and vocabulary at each level that one learns.
