But again, the subject remains distant, so far out of reach on a pedestal that we never engage with his story. This book covers both homerun chases in detail, as well as covering Aaron's rise as one of the last players in the Negro Leagues to jump to major league baseball and the racism that he encountered though the minor leagues and into the majors. In particular, it was interesting to get an insight into how the home run chase really was, how he actually felt like he lost something during it. The group of participants is divided into 2 tribes (teams), which are left on different islands. I highly recommend this book. Another great book about one of the game's greatest. Bryant does his best with a difficult subject, and has certainly compiled a workable body of research, even if his vanilla writing doesn't really carry all of it efficiently.

This biography of Henry Aaron has a lot of detail, from his family and their early days in Mobile, Alabama, to the history of Mobile, to baseball talk. I know we aren't perfect now but holy cow were black players such as Hank Aaron, Jackie Robinson, and Willie MayWell worth reading! It's remarkable that he did so much both within and outside of baseball.

The first season premiered in 2001, with the final season ending on 1 March 2009. Plenty of baseball stats and awards but that just is not the whole story. Cohen can remember when a hero didn’t have to worry about fences and lawyers and civilisation, and when people didn’t tell you off for killing dragons. The ear deafening sound of sirens roar inside a top secret complex, where Kavon Cagen has just escaped 20 years of hyper psychological, mental and physical conditioning by a shadowy organization called "The Institution." It's hard to classify Henry Aaron as underrated, but when you think of what he has accomplished in over two decades playing baseball plus years in the front office and compare that with the attention he has received compared to other players, he does seem sometimes overlooked. At that time he was the toast of America, but it was no secret, as revealed in Howard Bryant's fine biography of Aaron, The Last Hero, that it was a trying time for the man.Like many young baeball fans of the 1970s, one of my favorite players was Hank Aaron (the others were Al Kaline and Roberto Clemente). Gives some insight into the life of Henry Aaron!

Not simply a recounting of box scores and statistics he does a remarkable job of describing Mr. Aaron as a person as well the historical context he found himself (dating back to the antebellum South of his ancestors through the Barry Bonds home run chase. In many ways, he was hampered by his time, place, and personality.

TSometimes you wonder about the abundance of information that the author refers to in a biography. He gives the opinions Henry has on Willie Mays, Barry Bonds and other players, as well as managers and others in and around baseball! I agree with others that Henry is just not that forthcoming, and the author struggled to describe his view of the game. still, i'm glad i read it, as i really enjoyed the historical aspects. The biographical content and voice of Mr. Bryant are superb. Although he was surpassed by 'Steroid Baroid" Bonds, he remains baseball's sentimental Home run King. They swept over holdfasts and cities and kingdoms, felled heroes and armies by the score, riding pale dead horses, and leading hosts of the slain.

The unique role that Hank played in integrating the game, as it evolved from an east coast only sport into a nationwide business with all of the influences of tv, demographics, and the steroid era. Henry Aaron is now my hero. I feel like this book took me much to long to read - mostly because I just wasn't a fan of the writing - Bryant just didn't make me feel excited about reading his book. While Barry Bonds was pursing the all-time home run record, we of course were treated to lifetime perspectives of Henry Aaron. Hank Aaron has a rightful place in sports history, but his legacy should be far greater.

The book was a turgid read for me for the first third of it because I have little interest in baseball history, names, and records. He came into his own during the last gasp of the Negro League, after Jackie Robinson broke the initial barrier, and had to share the spotlight with Willie Mays - a much more colorful, media-friendly personality. The book does an excellent job of portraying the times in which he grew up, rise to prominence as one of the first African American baseball superstars and how he spent his years after playing baseball still impacting people's lives. They hunted the maids through the frozen forests, and fed their Celebrate National Dog Day with a look at some shows that feature a few of the most adorable dogs on TV.Looking for something to watch?

At that time he was the toast of America, but it was no secret, as revealed in Howard Bryant's fine biography of Aaron, The Last Hero, that it was a trying time for the man.I read this for a look at the systemic racism that is still prevalent in today's society. The Last Hero book. I’d been casually aware of Aaron’s heroics, being a lifetime fan of baseball and its various rich databases (it didn’t hurt that, until the debut of David Aardsma, Henry ranked first alphabetically), but hadn’t gotten much of a sense as to what the man was about.

Part of it could have been cut for in my opinion.

It was cool to see Aaron in the context of the civil rights movement and segregation, as well as to see the friendships and animosities in the Braves' clubhouse. Ambassadors choose on which of the two islands the united tribe will live and come up with a new name for it. 14 tracks (71:38).
